Rákóczi Cellar

"Oú la culture du vin prend ses racines…"

In Sárospatak there are many cellars with conditions favourable for maturing wine. The most important being the historical Rákóczi Cellar. The most noble family to live in the castle was the Rákóczi family who occupied the castle in the XVII.-XVIII. Ceintures

Hidden 14 metres under the castle grounds and extending to a near one kilometre in length, lies the famous Rákóczi Cellar, which dates back as early as 1530. The Rákóczi cellar which was dug out of rhyolite and tufa, forms a maze of winding corridors where hundereds of Hungarian oak barrels line its walls.

The cellar maintains a constant 96% humidity and 12 degrees Celsius temperature.

As the atmosphere remains the same, the sandy floors have long hidden royal footstep, and memories with thei rimages of centuries past, lay locked deep within the cellar walls.
