Château Pajzos & Château Megyer in Tokaj

In the heart of this legendary region of Tokaj in Hungary the purist Jean-Louis Laborde came to settle in 1992, acquiring Chateau Pajzos, which came directly from the Hungarian State and Chateau Megyer, bought in 2000 from the French insurance group GAN, with its cellars that stretch for several kilometres on several levels located beneath the residence which formerly belonged to Prince Rakoczi.

These cellars listed amongst UNESCO’s World Heritage sites provide an excellent constant temperature of 12°C and consistent humidity of 95%; they are extremely favourable for the development of good ageing for these fine Hungarian wines.

Located in the north eastern part of Hungary, bordering Ukraine and Slovakia, covering approximately 5 860 hectares, this AOC Tokay, grouping together 28 villages, has the status that most closely resembles the French INAO (National Institute for AOC) standard.

This area is characterised by four main elements: protection in the north given by the ZemplénMountain, a south-southwest position facing warm winds that blow in from the plain, constant humidity generated by 2 rivers, the Tisza and the Bodrog, and Indian summers which are frequently long and very sunny.

These 4 factors contribute specifically to the development of noble rot, “Botrytis Cinerea”, the basis for the characteristic style of wines from this region.

The two estates supervised by Mr Maxime Belrepayre, in total and permanent collaboration with Jean-Louis Laborde, are managed with the same coordination of personnel and technological means.
